Whats a good sewing machine to buy for my daughter for Christmas?
Does anybody know anything about the brands and features you should look for?

A sewing machine dealer is the best place to shop - take your daughter with you so she can try the machine.
Once you buy it, they won't take it back. Like buying a car, they may trade-up, but they do not do refunds.
The brands they sell will have the basics; straight stitch, zigzag, reverse stitching and maybe more.
Stay away from discount stores, fabric/craft stores and Sears - they sell name brands but considered the machines "merchandise" and do not provide any support in use or problem solving. Sears does offer repair, but have heard it is iffy.
