How can I tell the age of vintage linens?
I was given a box of old clothes. Before finding their age, I have washed in the washing machine with regular detergent and bleach because there were a large number of yellow spots. Only looking more closely once the items have been out of the dryer did I notice a lot of lace and heavily detailed richelieu was done to hand. It caused me to question the age of objects so I contacted the person who gavest them to me and they said they were at least 85 years, but perhaps more as they had been in 85 years the owner's family as far as their grandmother. My original intention was use of lace for my sewing, but I'm afraid I have something more valuable and I do not want to ruin it! How do I know?
I used to restore quilts and ran into this often. I soon discovered I knew more than many experts. go to a book store and look at books on how to date the tissues. I have more information on books. The tissues were then 100% cotton were used to lace and brogue. You can check with the site of the Smithsonian. If you live near Washington, DC, please contact there. They have a museum and take donations and assessments on the old machine. Make sure you do not leave your items with someone for an evaluation; make sure you do a thorough check on who you are. You are very lucky that the articles did not collapse during washing. This tells me they properly stored and not put in an attic where they have suffered dry rot. If you choose to iron using a press cloth and a cold iron. Be gentle so as not to stretch the items, press, do not stretch! What you can be very valuable to a collector. If you choose to keep, consider shadow boxes with acid free mat boards, etc. Keep out of direct sunlight! In the future, if faced, hand wash gently in cold water with mild soap (Ivory). Avoid bleach as it weakens filaments and never place them in a dryer. Take photos up close, or a videotape. It is very hard to ensure something like this. Most homeowners insurance companies do not want to "mess with the" textiles. It is very difficult to put a price on these items unless are in a controlled environment. They are considered "antique blue" and not replaceable.
