How does a mood stabilizer help with bipolar?
If you are on a mood stabilizer of some sort would it help eliminate the episodes of mania and depression most of the time? But when the episodes to hit are they still severe?
Or does a mood stabilizer simply make the episodes of mania and depression less severe all the time, so it's easier to keep under control?
Hey, I hope I'll be able to help -- I have bipolar disorder and am on a mood stabilizer for it (Depakote).
Meds react differently in everyone, but this is how it is, for me at least. I still have depression and mania, but they are incredibly dampened, and closer to "normal".
Ways its effected my mania:
-I get regular sleep, at least 6-7 hours, where I would normally go days without sleeping
-My thoughts are more controlled and I don't hop from subject to subject as much when talking
-I remember to eat (it increases my appetite)-- I used to outright forget to eat sometimes, before treatment
Ways its effected my depression:
-I still cry and get sad, but its not completely uncontrollable, or for no reason.
-I can still do things when I'm depressed, even if I don't feel that great about them... its better than staying inside for a week at a time
My meds make more of an impact bringing down my mania than they do bringing up my depression.
