Any tips for Viking Scandinavia 400 thread tangle?

I have a new Scandinavia 400 and very little skill at using it and while testing the embroidery function, I got a major thread jam (top thread winding up underneath the needle plate, causing the fabric to bind to the plate). Now everytime I try to sew regular straight stitches, my top thread gets tangled around my bobbin casing-- the entire casing, not just the bobbin itself. I am embarrassed to take it back to the shop one week after purchasing it, so if you can help me avoid this, I would be very happy.

TAKE IT BACK!!!!! Don't be embarrassed. Lots of mistakes take place when you have a new machine. You need to figure out what you did wrong so it doesn't happen again. And you need your machine fixed so no damage occurs. this is why it is a great idea to buy your machine from a sewing machine dealer, they are there to help
