If I'm using pieced fabric to make a zip pouch, do I need to quilt it or can it just be used as fabric?
I hand sewed hexagons and will piece the rest of the exterior of the pouch. I will line the pouch too. Do I need to stabilize the pieced part (and if so, with what) or can I just use it as a single piece of fabric without quilting it?
You don't *have* to do anything since you could use your pieced fabric just like any fabric.
Since you're making something where the interior (and therefore all the seams) would show and maybe cause problems though, it's good that you're using a liner in this case.
You can "stabilize" the pieced fabric if you want though, as well as using a liner (or instead), in various ways:
...you could use "iron-on" interfacing (but in my experience that will stick to the interior parts of each little hexagon or other piece so that they'll all look kind of sunk-in between the seams)
...you could use a sew-in interfacing (usually sewing around the edges of the whole piece and interfacing)
...you could use a piece of fabric (stiffer fabric, if you want) in the same way as you'd use regular sew-in interfacing
...you could quilt the pieced fabric to another piece of fabric (perhaps with some thin batting between if you wanted) then use that as your fabric, or you could use "ties" instead of quilting-stitching to hold the layers together if you wanted to do that
So whether you'd want to use an interfacing or quilt "sandwich" (pieced top fabric + batting + backing fabric) or nothing would depend on the way you want the pouch exterior to look and function (supple vs. stiffer) and also what you'll be carrying in the pouch (heavy or sharp stuff that might cause problems for the piecing, or lighter and more rounded stuff which would be fine for the piecing but could make the bag look a bit more lumpy perhaps).
