How can I keep fabric from fraying without adding volume?
I make washable nursing pads for my sister out of old sheets flannel with an inner layer of an unbleached birdseye weave material. I tried to finish the edges with satin stitch on my sewing machine, but he made the move kind of "wavy" - I can not lie flat, so they are clearly visible under his shirt. I also tried to finish with a lap and stitching, which was difficult and cumbersome at the edges, so these ones showed through his shirt as well. I tried with my overlock sewing machine using the overlock stitch or zig-zag stitching on something else, and I found that the banks had enough ratty and frayed pretty quickly. Do you have other suggestions I was able to finish them in a way they are sustainable and do not show through his shirt?
I would try to reduce tension on the wire to see if it was less a gathering effect of the canvas. I saw that sergers adjustments that will allow you to finish the edges with any distortions at all.
